South Mississippi is home to exciting cities and towns offering a plethora of activities, culture and scenic landscapes. The Mississippi River, the largest river system in North America, flows near the southern Mississippi cities of Vicksburg and Natchez. The city of Vicksburg offers authentic southern hospitality, a wealth of historical sites and information, as well as modern attractions, while Natchez is known for American antebellum history and the important role it played in the development of the Old Southwest. Natchez State Park is located just 10 mi (16 km) north of historic Natchez, while Homochitto National Forest is situated east of Natchez near Meadville. The city of Hattiesburg is a cultural hub offering plenty of attractions, restaurants and shopping, as well as being home to the University of Southern Mississippi. Just south of Hattiesburg is De Soto National Forest where year-round recreational opportunities can be enjoyed. Another popular city in South Mississippi is Meridian, located northeast of Hattiesburg. Meridian has a large arts scene and is home to many art and cultural organizations.Tourist Attractions
