Welcome to Natchez, MS!
Situated on the banks of the Mississippi River in the southwestern corner of the state, Natchez is steeped in history. The area—first inhabited by the Natchez Indians—was initially settled by the French in 1716 and is considered the oldest settlement on the great river. Natchez eventually became part of the United States in 1798 with the establishment of the Mississippi Territory, serving first as capital of the territory and later as the first capital of the state of Mississippi. Its rich soil, mild climate and river location were ideal for growing cotton and, coupled with the slave trade, fortunes were soon made in the area. In fact, prior to the Civil War, over half of the country’s millionaires resided in Natchez, and many of its elegant mansions still stand today—the city boasts over 600 examples of antebellum architecture. Several of the stately homes offer daily tours, while others open their doors to the public during the city’s Spring and Fall Pilgrimages.Along with this Southern charm, casino gambling can be found on Mississippi riverboats, and the Natchez Trace Parkway—which runs for 444 miles (715 km) from Natchez to Nashville and was first used as a path by the area’s Native Americans—offers scenic driving, picnic areas and historic sites. And every October, the Great Mississippi River Balloon Race is an annual three-day race that features colorful hot air ballons over the river and live music at the historic Rosalie Bicentennial Gardens.
